I saw you in an old Vermeer

I saw you in an old Vermeer
but my vision was not clear
all the canvases are bare
now that you’re not standing there

I heard you dressed as Claude Monet
and painted pictures for a day
all the canvases are cold
now that you’re never growing old

You’re living in a foreign land
that I will never understand
all the canvases are cracked
now that you’re not coming back

I’m going to go there too one day
that’s going to happen come what may
meanwhile I see you on the wall
it’s better than no place at all

I saw you in an old Vermeer
but my vision was not clear
all the canvases are bare
now that you’re not anywhere
