Pat and Will

Patrick Pearse and Willie Pearse
stood side by side when the fight was fierce
Pat was a fool who kept a school
He was sick and tired of British rule
For his elder brother Willie kept the can
He was Patrick Pearse's greatest fan
To the GPO they were bound to go
On an April morning some seeds to sow
A new Republic Pat did declare
To passers-by who thought him quare
With his big slouch hat and his swinging sword
And his Proclamation with great big words
With McDonagh, McDermott and old Tom Clarke
The boys went dancing in the dark
With Connolly, Plunkett and Eamonn Ceannt
Pat was the boy who would rant and rant
The Empire replied, the buildings fell
And the GPO became a living hell
But the beauty was terrible, the peace profound
When Pat and his brother went underground
No bloodline left, yet the blood flows still
From big strong Pat to the weaker Will
